Rieko, a mother, has been living alone with her son, Yugo, since her husband died in an accident. Working hard with her hands, Yugo has grown up to be a fine student with his sights set on a prestigious university. From now on, all their hard work will be rewarded, and once Yugo enters the workforce, a happy life awaits them...or so it was supposed to. In the summer before Yugo's graduation next year, Hiraoka and his son discuss his future plans with his homeroom teacher, Shiraishi. After the auspicious meeting with the three teachers, Rieko is left alone in the classroom and is told that "there is a problem regarding Yugo's higher education"...
